Tech firms need content that doesn’t just repeat the messages they’re delivering in Japan

The Japanese tech market has a lot to offer the English-speaking world. Japanese start-ups are making waves in areas as far-reaching as gaming, programming and robotics. To reach their full potential in the global market, Japanese tech firms need marketing content that doesn’t just repeat the same messages they’re delivering in Japan – it needs to be adapted to cross cultural bridges and truly connect with users and prospects overseas.

Tech should be for everyone

Your tech product deserves marketing and UI that your audience can dive straight into, with no cultural barriers getting in the way. My goal is to help make that a reality, by drawing on my extensive training in clear language and experience helping major tech firms connect with audiences across the English-speaking world.

Avoid misinterpretation

You probably already know what it feels like when cultures collide. The fear that something you’ve said could be misinterpreted. As someone who once spent two years on a small island in Okinawa, I can totally relate. When I first arrived, I was constantly afraid of making a fool out of myself, but I soon built up a solid group of local friends.

Before long, some of them started coming to me for all kinds of translation help – from restaurant menus to typhoon warnings! In these early days of my translation career, I acquired three golden rules for translating for international audiences, which I stand by to this day.

My rules when translating for international audiences

Direct

Be direct in your communication, but friendly too!

01

Diverse

Always remember that you’re writing for a diverse audience.

02

Welcoming

Communicate culture in a way that invites people in, instead of pushing them out.

03

The highest professional standards

After acquiring JLPT N1 and an MA (Distinction) in Applied Translation Studies from a prestigious British university, I’m now a freelance translator and editor with over 3 years of industry experience – including as the main British English linguist for a major player in the VR industry. I’ve stuck by the golden rules above to deliver translations that meet tech users and prospects where they are.

Finally, as an Associate Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting, the only UK-based independent professional membership association for practising translators, I pledge to uphold the highest professional standards, and as a member of their Japanese network board, I am continuously developing my skills to stay on the cutting edge of industry trends.
